History

"Les Editions Héritage" started publishing, in French language, various coloring books, mostly of various figures from Radio-Canada. From 1968 to 1987 the publisher own the rights to French translation and distribution of various publications of US "Marvel Comics" and "DC Comic"s with such famous characters as "Batman", "Captain America", "Cheyenne Kid", "Conan The Barbarian", "Daredevil", "Dr.Strange", "Fantastic Four", "Flash, "The Incedible Hulk", "Iron Man", "Kamandi", "Karate Kid", "Star Wars", "Superman", "Thor", "The Avengers","Warlock", "Wonder Woman" and "X-Men", all in their own series. "The Phantom" and "Flash Gordon" (King Features Syndicate) were also published by "Les Editions Héritage". Another aspect of the "Héritage" publications - the humor comics - came from the Compahy "Archie Comics" with titles such as "Archie" "Betty and Veronica", "Jughead" and from "King Features Syndicate" again with "Popeye" and "Felix the Cat".Finally the editor had also an agreement with the US Company "Gold Key" for releasing "Tweety and Sylvester", "The Road Runner", "Bugs Bunny", "The Pink Panther" and "Woody Woodpecker". In fact, and unlike the all-color comics books in the USa, the "Héritage" comics books were published only in black and white, which took away a large part of attractiveness compared to their American counterparts. All in all, the "Héritage" catalog represents 2,800 comics in 19 years of publishing. Many albums were also released with unsold copies later glued together.

In January 1975 "Les Editions Héritage" started their "Le Fantôme" magazine, reprinting material from the US Phantom comic books published by Gold Key, King and Charlton Comics. Unlike the US versions however, the Canadian series was in black/white. The series ended with issue 24 in December, 1977 .Unsold copies of the issues were later glued together with a new outside cover and collected as albums.

The material for the six Mandrake stories in this series came from the Phantom and Flash Gordon series from 1967 published in the USA by King Comics.

Another Mandrake story was also published in the separate "Daredevil" magazine (issue # 25-26 / July 1981) published by the "Editions Héritage". See: Daredevil 25-26 (Héritage), reprint of the story featured in Le Fantôme 19 (Héritage) (July 1977).
