Biography

Walter Howarth was born in Bolton, Lancahire. He attended Tonge Fold School and later won a scolarship to Bolton Art College. In 1946 he made his first cover, aged just 16. He startet his illustrator career working for Manchester's Industrial Art Services. One of their clients was World Distributors Ltd, and he soon became their regular cover artist, drawing a large cover production. He also made a few stories with "Dr. Who" and "Maverick". In mid-sixties he went freelance and made covers for annuals, sticker book, colouring book, jigsaws and other paraphernalia. He retired in 1993 but continued to do private commissions until 2006.

He was survived by his wife, Renee, sons Gary and Wayne, daughter Wendy, and grandsons James and Michael.
