Issue overview
In 1990 "Istituto Geografico De Agostini" released La grande avventura dei fumetti with the sub title gli eroi - la storia - i segreti.
The series is curated by Franco Fossati, Sergio Giuffrida, Sergio Pomati with contributions by Ferruccio Alessandri, Luca Boschi, Gianni Brunoro, Antonio Serra and Umberto Volpini.
Regular series
Each issue (wrapped in clear plastic) consists of:
- 12 pages of "Encyclopedia" with the history of comics (later collected into three volumes),
- 8 pages of "dictionary" with an index of series, comics and creators (later collected into one volume) and
- 2 pages of "Drawing is easy" an illustrated manual on drawing techniques (later collected into on volume).
- 34 pages of comic stories, La raccolta de la grande avventura dei fumetti (later collected into four volumes).
The issues have two pages with "The look of...". Mandrake featuring in issue 12 and The Phantom in issue 10. In "La raccolta..." Mandrake featuring with one story in issue 2, and the Phantom in issue 4. In the "dictionary" Mandrake is presented on page 169 and the Phantom on page 212 (issues 22 and 27).

Collector binders
The series was intended to be collected in binders, which were sold on an ongoing basis at the usual newsstands.
The "Encyclopedia" binders were released at the same time as issues 8, 19 and 39. The first binder collected issues 1 to 18, the second issues 19 to 34 and the third issues 35 to 50.
The "Collection (raccolta...)" binders were released at the same time as issues 12, 25, 35 and 43. The first binder collected issues 1 to 12, the second issues 13 to 25, the third issues 26 to 37 and the fourth issues 38 to 50.
The "Dictionary" binder was released at the same time as issue 30 and the "Drawing is easy" binder at the same time as issue 47.
Reprint
The series was reprinted in 1992.
