The main purpose of this page is to quickly identify the first, second, third reprints of issues from Nerbini's "Albi grandi avventure" series, based on the backlist printed on the back covers. As well as getting an idea of when the various prints were published.

Print

Chronological Publication by Year

Most of the lists and indexes that deal with Nerbini's pre-war album releases focus on the character to which the album is dedicated. Like album series: "Topolino", "Mandrake" and on. The origin of these albums are the weekly newspaper "Topolino (Mickey Mouse)" and the supplement series "Supplemento TOPOLINO". The idea was to reuse the stories (and the printing plates) that were serialized in these magazines, and use them in albums - which remained in the newsstands until they were sold out, unlike the newspaper-like ones which were replaced when a new issue came out.

This page focuses on a chronological overview, to help recognize different prints and variations of the albums that contain stories with Mandrake.

1933

In an interview (Linus, nr 12, March 1966) by Franco De Giacomo Mario Nerbini said the first issue was printed in summer 1933 but sold poorly, but then the second edition was a success. Supporting this is an ad in the "TOPOLINO Supplemento" issue from July 30, 1933: Soon Topolino will publish... Topolino contro Wolp, il terribile brigante del West. And then in the issue og October 8, 1933: Next week buy... Topolino contro Wolp, il terribile brigante del West, followed by the issue from November 8, 1933: Great success has achieved... Topolino contro Wolp, il terribile brigante del West.

There are known only about 10-15 copies of this album, all marked with "October 1933". Most collectors today assume that no album was printed in the summer of 1933 and that the October issue was the first to be printed.

According to the ad in issue 104 of Topolino (from December 23, 1934)) the second "Cino e Franco" album, "La misteriosa fiamma della Regina Loana", is released. But it is uncertain whether copies were ever printed with December 1934 on the cover. Since there are albums with January 1935 printed on the cover, it would be unusual to make a new print only weeks after the first came on the market. There is also something about how the albums in landscape format were stapled together. In the middle of January 1935, these are with cardboard covers that are stapled together in the middle of the album. Before this time, the cover was made of the same paper as the rest of the album and stapled together with two staples on the far left.[footnotes 1]

In 1934 (October 14) Nerbini released a new newspaper-like magazine, "L'Avventuroso". The first issue printed various US and Italian comics: "Gordon (Flash Gordon)", "Radio Patrol (Radio Patrol)", "L'Agente Segreto X-9 (Secret Agent X9")", "Dal deserto alla jungla", "Il cacciatore de serpenti", "Jim, l'uomo della jungla (Jungle Jim")".

Note

  1. About the two staples on the 1934 issues: When comparing photos of these albums in landscape format, the pins are placed identically on the albums. Something that one can expect when the same machine was used to staple these together. But there are some exceptions, as on "Sotto la bandiera del Re della jungla" from January 1935. One can also see this on the three variants of the "Topolino e Piedidolci cavallo da corsa" issue. The one with "Cent 50" in blue ink looks most original. The one with "Cent 50" in red ink has the staples placed different, and it also exists a copy with 3 staples. The one without the price on the cover looking more like the "Sotto la bandiera del Re della jungla" issue, but not identically. For these albums, the usual stapler for the "Stabiilimente Grafici Vallecchi" printing house does not seem to have been used.
