The Golden Age of the Comics is a US publication of US strips from the golden age, published between 1967 and 197?.

History

The series started as a numbered hardcover series. According to the dust jacket of issue 8 from 1971 the previous issues were: "Little Nemo in Slumberland" by Winsor McCay, "Flash Gordon" by Alex Raymond, "The Phantom" by Lee Falk, "Krazy Kat" by George Herrimann (Published in cooperation with Grosset and Dunlap), "Little Nemo in Slumberland" (Italian edition - published in cooperation with Garzanti Editore), "Terry and the Pirates" by Milton Caniff, "Mandrake the Magician" by Lee Falk, "Flash Gordon" -Into the Water World by Alex Raymond, "Nostalgia Comics Magazine" and "Popeye" by E Segar. Currently in preparation: "Prince Valiant" by Hal Foster, "Minute Movies" by Ed Wheelan, "The E.C. Horror Comics" compiled by Bill Gaines, "Captain America" by Simen and Kirby.

This series is not indexed at Comics Database, but it looks like the first issue is a 1969 reprint of the original 1945 edition of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" published by McCay Features Synidicate. The second issue is "Flash Gordon", with a red dust jacket, printing Sunday newspaper comic strips from April 12, 1936 through October 30, 1938. This issue is often mistaken as part of a "Flash Gordon" series from 1967, with blue dust jacket. The third issue with "The Phantom" have the characteristic The Golden Age of the Comics dust jacket with numbering at the cover , followed by issue 4 with "Terry and the Pirates". The look of the dust jackets for the "Krazy Kat" and the Italian "Little Nemo in Slumberland" issues are unknown, but the The Golden Age of the Comics dust jacket are used for issues 7 and 8. Between #7 (Mandrake) and #8 (Popeye) from 1971 the "Flash Gordon" probably is a reprint of issue 2, and the "Nostalgia Comics Magazine" is the first issue of a new series.

In about 1974 the characteristic The Golden Age of the Comics cover was used in (reprint) series with cardstock cover without any numbering on the cover, followed by four more issues with "Terry and the Pirates".
