Gary T. Poole got his start in comedy writing and illustrating a comic strip in "The Indian Post", his school newspaper at Gaffney Senior High. At WFGN-AM, his local radio station, he also had a 15 minutes three days a week show called "The Gary Poole Show".

He moved to New York City to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Before he got involved with writing for comics he appeared in many commercials, plays and television productions.

At Gold Key Comics Poole wrote for "everything they published", and in 1966 (or 1967) he wrote several stories with Mandrake and The Phantom for [King Comics]]. About 1967 be became editor-in-chief at Western Publishing.

Poole is also an artist and has illustrated several of his books.
