In 1984, Kjell Steen became one of the writers in the "Fantomet-Klubben (the Phantom club)" in the Norwegian serial magazine Fantomet, dedicated to Lee Falk's "The Phantom". Steen signed his articles and replies to submitted letters with "Sjefen (the Boss)", a name with which he is associated to this day. After the club was closed down, he continued with the column "Sjefen svarer (The Boss Answers)" where he answered incoming letters with questions mainly about the Phantom, but also questions related to other sub-series in the magazine.
